Math test on chapter 5 this Friday.

Next Friday, December 16th, we will have our Christmas party. We will order pizza for lunch and make gingerbread houses. In order for this to be a successful project, every student needs to contribute $3.00 for pizza and either a tub of white unwhipped frosting or a bag or small colorful candy. A letter is going home today (12/6) so that you know what you need to bring in. There is a sign-up sheet on the door for other items needed.

We are finished with the first chapter on multiplication, which are facts 0-4. Make sure you are practicing at home. We know how to solve problems, and now need to memorize those facts. Flashcards are great.

This week in addition to our Spelling and Reading tests at the end of the week, we have a Social Studies chapter 2 test on Friday. Use the study guide and vocabulary chart to know what to study. Vocabulary charts will be collected on Friday and must be complete to earn full credit.

Just a reminder about reading calendars--each student needs to write the title of what he/she reads nightly, and the parent needs to initial. Each day is worth 2 points and will be added into the reading grade.

This week we begin our ITBS standardized testing. These last for the next two weeks! They are really important because these tests tell us a student's current academic level, along with his/her strengths and weaknesses. It is really important that students do their best to be present on these days. Testing will be done in the morning. Try not to be late on these days. Students need to eat a healthy, low sugar breakfast and get a good night's sleep to be ready to test.

Regular classwork and homework will still be assigned during these next two weeks.

Please see me if you have any concerns or questions.

Book orders were given out with ordering instructions. Friday, 9/23 is the deadline.

We need empty, clean yogurt containers for paint containers. The short Greek containers work the best (Fage, Oikos, Trader Joes). If your family is eating these, please save those containers, give them a wash, and send them in. Any help will be greatly appreciated!

We have a Social Studies chapter 1 test on Tuesday and a Math chapter 1 test on Wednesday.

Reading test is on Friday and Spelling test will be on Thursday and Friday.

Third graders will be doing the readings this week at the 8:30 school Mass. Join us if you can!

This week we are learning about author's purpose. Why does an author write? The main 3 reasons can be remembered with the word PIE, which stand for Persuade, Inform, and Entertain.

There will be a reading story test on Thursday and a spelling test on Thursday and Friday.

In math, we are reading and writing numbers up to the hundred-thousands place.

We have the opportunity to see the author Jon Scieszka next Tuesday, March 1st! He is a very popular children's author. He will be speaking at Crossroads School. We will walk there and be back before lunch. If students want to get a personally autographed book, they will need to order them through Children's Book World, the store who is arranging the talk. Order forms went home today and are due on Thursday, 2/24. Please return the permission slip with both sides filled out ASAP. This is an exciting chance for us!

15 out of 20 students received a 93% or better on the last 5 minute multiplication facts test. WOW! I am so proud of this accomplishment! Keep it up 3rd grade! As we are working on our geometry chapter, don't forget to review those facts.

Some upcoming events:

Valentine's Day is next Monday! This is always a fun day for students. If students wish to bring Valentine cards to exchange, they need to bring one for every student. A class list will be going home on Monday, 2/7.
Flowergrams are on sale this week for $1.00. Students may purchase a flower with a note to send to a friend or buy one for a parent.
On Valentine's Day, students may wear free dress with pink, red, and white.
Multiplication test will be given every Friday from now on. Those students who do not score at a given level which is announced every Friday will have extra multiplication homework. The goal is that the extra homework helps those students who need to keep working on their facts gain speed and accuracy. I have seen a lot of progress already.

Native American Project

A Native-American report was assigned 1/10/11.

The project is part of the Social Studies grade, and is due on Friday, 1/28/11 at 8:00 a.m.

Directions and supplies were handed. Students need to research a California tribe, create a small 3-D model of the tribe's shelter (about the size of a 1/2 sheet of paper), write a mini-book, and color the region where the tribe lived. All paper supplies have been handed out in class. Students will need to use their own materials for the home model. The file folder handed out in class is what the cover, map, and house information sheet need to be glued onto. Please come and see me if there are any questions!THERE IS A WONDERFUL SAMPLE IN THE CLASSROOM.

Week of December 13

The Christmas concert in on Tuesday, December 14th at 7:00 p.m. Students should wear dressy clothes--NO jeans, shorts, or sweats. Please drop students off at 6:30 in the classroom and pick them up in the classroom afterward.

On Thursday, we are buiding gingerbread houses. In order for this to be successful, I need some student contributions. Students #1-10, please bring a bag of small candies--M&Ms, mini candycanes, gum drops, lemon drops, mints, etc. Students #11-21, please bring a tub of white (UNwhipped) frosting.

On Thursday, we will have a pizza party for our Christmas celebration. I need each student to please bring $3.00 if he/she wants to have pizza that day.

Friday is half day--12:00 dismissal. Have a wonderful holiday break!

We had a special feast to celebrate Thanksgiving. Mr. Browning led the prayer, students shared what they were especially thankful for, and we had a delicious homemade lunch with all the fixings. This week is another short week! No new Spelling words or Reading story.

Tuesday, 11/23 is Fall Dress Day. Students may wear fall colors. Students may also purchase fall face painting for $0.50 at recess.

PLEASE send in toiletry items for the homeless: soap, shampoo, conditioner, toothbrushes, toothpaste, new socks, razors, shaving cream, etc. These are handed out to the homeless right here in our community. It is a great way to teach our students about the importance of helping others. We have not had many contributions yet... Please help.

Wednesday is Mass and a half day--12:00 dismissal.

Mighty Multiplication and a field trip

This week we began learning about multiplication concepts and facts. Students are learning strategies for solving multiplication (skip counting, repeated addition) as well as taking timed fact tests to improve speed and accuracy. It is really important that students practice their multiplication facts at home also. Flashcards are great for this. A great, simple website is aaamath.com. These facts need to become automatic. Don't try to master all of the facts at once. Start with the 2's and 5's, then go on with the other facts.

A permission slip went home today for our field trip to the California Science Center on November 19th. There is a $5.00 bus fee. Parents are welcome to chaperone; there is no limit on how many chaperones we can bring. However, there is very limited room on the bus. Parents will need to drive themselves to the Science Center. Carpooling is recommended. I need to know who would like to chaperone by next Wednesday, 11/10, because the Science Center needs a final headcount. If you want to chaperone, please send me a note.

This Friday is our Halloween celebration. If students want to wear their Hallowen costume (no weapons), they must come dressed in it in the morning. If they want to change out of it afterward, they may bring their uniform. If a student chooses not to participate in the parade and costume contest, that student must wear the school uniform (not free dress.)

On Wednesday, students may buy Halloween tattoos for $0.50 at morning recess.

Chapter 2 Math test on Thursday. Reading and spelling tests on Thursday as well.

This Friday we are taking our field trip to the Aquarium of the Pacific. Students need to be ON TIME! We are leaving immediately after assembly. Students need to wear their PE uniform and bring a sack lunch. There is no cost for this field trip!

There are no new Spelling words this week because it is a review week. We will take a dictation sentence test in place of the normal Spelling test using words from the past five weeks.

There is no new Reading story. We are testing on the skills learned in Unit 1.

These last few days are always busy ones:

Tuesday: We have our Music performance at 8:30 a.m. in the hall.

Monday is our annual Spelling bee in the church. Our contestants will be Justine, Boris, and Oliver. Aaryona and Anna will be our alternates if needed. Parents are welcome to join us.

No Mass this Wednesday; it will be Thursday at 11 instead. It will be a special Mass to honor our graduating eighth grade class.

There will be a chapter 11 Math test on Tuesday. Monday's homework will be a review.

Let's try to get a PERFECT before the school year ends. Everyday we have one or two tardies. Third grade has only gotten one PERFECT free dress since the year began! Parents, please help your student be ON TIME for school daily. This teaches an valuable life skill--punctuality is important!

We are going to the Getty Center on Tuesday, May 11th. Parents who are chaperoning need to meet us at 8:20 in the courtyard.

Here's what we are learning:
Religion--May is the month we celebrate Mary. We will have our school May crowning after the 8:30 Mass on Wednesday. Each student is asked to bring a flower to put at the alter for Mary on May 12th. We will then have an altar set up outside the school office. Grades 3,4,5 are asked to bring flowers for the school altar during the week of May 17--21.

Language Arts--this is a review week because we are at the end of our unit. We will be taking the skills test. There's no new spelling words or story.

Math--We are finishing up our chapter on long division. There will be a chapter test on Wednesday, and then we will begin chapter 11 on fractions.

Social Studies--Community leadership, govenment, and rules.

Famous American reports are due on March 22, 23, and 24. Students signed up in class for the day they will give their presentation. Remember, each student needs to give a 3-5 presentation as their person. They will speak as the person and look like the person. On that day, the "Important Thing" poem is due. This Friday, 3/19, there is no school. Teachers will attend a religious education conference.

Here's what we are learning:

Religion: Finishing up chapter 10--the parts of the Mass. There will be a test on TUESDAY.

Language Arts: Working on predicting and reading the story A Woman Who Outshone The Sun. Spelling words have R-controlled vowel patterns. Spelling tests on Wednesday and Thursday. Reading test on Thursday. Writing a how-to paragraph and working on elaborating when we write.

Math: We continue with our study of geometry, including solid figures, perimeter, area, and symmetry.

Social Studies: Chapter 5--pioneers who came to our land.

Here's what we are learning this week:

Religion: Jesus offers us "living water" which is the Good News and his body and blood in the sacrament of Holy Communion. Catholics are open to all. We are attending Mass every Wednesday at 8:30. Parents are welcome to join us and sit with us if you can.

Language Arts: We are reading the story Sam and the Lucky Money and working on the concept of setting--time and place--and how it affects the characters. Story test on Friday. Spelling words have tricky letter combinations. Spelling tests on Thursday and Friday. Language--adjectives.

Math:We are finishing up chapter 7 on division and word problem strategies. There will be a chapter test on Friday.

Social Studies: Native American cultures today. Look for a famous American project to be assigned this week.

The Native American projects that came in look fabulous! Thank you to parents for your guidance and help on these projects. The students had time to look at classmates' projects. Then we grouped all the homes of the same tribes to make villages, which will remain in our classroom on display for a while. Stop by to see them if you can. There will be another Social Studies project, this time on a famous American, going home next week.

Tomorrow is Ash Wednesday. We will be going to Mass as a whole school at 8:30.

Here's what we are learning:
Language Arts--theme, words with consonant blends, adjectives. Spelling tests on Thursday and Friday, story test on Friday.

Math-- dividing with divisors up to 10, choosing an operation to solve word problems, finding missing dividends and divisors by using the inverse operation and fact families. There will be a test next week. Every Friday we are taking a 100 point multiplication fact test. This is a timed test. Students who get less than 95% will have an extra multiplication packet for homework every week.

We will celebrate Valentine's Day this Friday. Students may bring Valentines as long as they bring one for every student. **Students may wear free dress in red, pink, and white.**

Students will be getting 2nd quarter report cards Tuesday. Please sign and return **the envelopes only** by Friday. **Take the report card out and keep at home. By signing the envelope, I will know that you have received the report card.**

**On Wednesday, 2/10, students may buy Valentine tatoos for $0.50.

Don't forget--next Monday, February 15th is President's Day--NO School. Native American project is due February 16th. If you have any questions, SEE ME!!

Religion--We are finishing up chapter 8--understanding the Trinity. There will be a test on Wednesday.

Language Arts--We are at the end of unit 3 and will be taking our unit tests this week. There will be no new story and no new spelling words. The spelling homework will be using review words and the test on Friday will be Dictation sentences.

Math--We will finish up chapter 6 on dividing with dividends 0-5 and will take our chapter test on Wednesday. Continued practice on multiplication facts will benefit division.

A Busy Month!

December is such a busy month. Here's some reminders.

This Friday, 12/11, third grade is doing a skit about Our Lady of Guadelupe. It will be at 10:50 in the church. All students are participating in one way or another. Parents are welcome.

Next Thursday, 12/17, is the Christmas music concert. The students have been working hard on the Orf instruments playing the harmony for Feliz Navidad. The concert starts at 7:00. Students need to be dropped off in the classroom at 6:30 so parents can go get a seat. Students need to wear dressy clothes. NO JEANS or SWEATS. Also, many students will be sitting on the ground, so make sure that whatever your student wears, he/she is able to get up and down to the ground easily.

On Friday, 12/18, we will have our class Christmas celebration. We will order pizza for lunch. Please send in $2.00 to cover the cost of this. We will also be building gingerbread houses. A letter went home requesting supplies for this. Students #1-8 need to bring one box of plain graham crackers and one bag of small candy. Students #9-16 need to bring one tub of white frosting and one bag of small candy. Thanks for your help with the supplies. Making the gingerbread houses is a third grade tradition, and is always a lot of fun every year. If any parents want to volunteer in the classroom on this day, from 9:30-10:30, it would be great!

Friday, 12/18, students may wear red, white, and/or green free dress with a Santa hat. Don't forget, it's a half day. Dismissal is at noon.

This week, there are no new Spelling words or Reading stories. We are working on finishing up some projects started in Language Arts. Everyone is working on a Tornado book, and half of the class is completing a Freckle Juice book report. In Math, we have started multiplication. Students should practice these at home to memorize their facts.

We are collecting toiletries for the homeless in our area. Please send what you can. We need soap, shampoo, socks, deodorant, toothbrushes, toothpaste, disposable razors, shaving cream, and hair combs. Thanks for your help.

Today, third grade graphed M&M's. We were learning about bar graphs and how to use them to solve problems. So after third grade recorded their M&M's by color on their bar graph, they had to create 4 addition or subtraction problems to go with the graph information. They traded with a partner, and had to solve each other's problems. Finally, they had a tasty treat.

This week, we have a few fun assemblies planned:
Monday--we will learn from two basketball players who play for the Los Angeles Lakers in the Wheelchair NBA.

Thursday--we will go to Crossroads to hear their orchestra play the Carnival of the Animals. If you can come with us, please call Francis in the office. Space is limited, and we will be walking. Permission slips need to be returned by Wednesday!

Don't forget--November 11th is Veteran's Day. No School!

Halloween is coming quickly, and I'm sure most children have their Halloween costumes planned by now. Just a few guidelines:
Please make sure that the costumes are school-appropriate
No weapons allowed
Costumes need to be comfortable enough to wear throughout the day.

Here's what we are learning this week:

Religion: Chapter 2--The Sacraments of initiation welcome us into the church. There will be a chapter test on Friday.

Language Arts: We have finished our unit, so this week is a review week. That means no new story or Spelling words. We will be taking our Unit 1 skills tests.

Math: Adding with regrouping, estimating sums, making a table to solve problems.

Social Studies: We are at the end of chapter 1. Instead of a test, students will make a map of California and label important California regions and locations.

We are starting ITBS testing on Moday, 9/28. These tests will last for approximately two weeks. While your student can't study for these tests, there are some things that will help him/her have a positive testing experience.

Be present and on time. We will test in the mornings before recess. Please don't miss school unless it is absolutely necessary. Make-up ITBS tests will take away from other academic class time.
Eat breakfast! It's like putting gas in the car. Kids do better academically when they've had a nutritious breakfast.
Encourage them to try their best.

We will still be doing other classwork, although with a lightened schedule. Homework will still be assigned as well.
